“Not only do we separate ourselves from someone who does not deserve the respect of his colleagues, but we want to send a clear message that the era of deliberate ignorance and shameful sexual abuse and harassment at work in our industry is over,” the Academy Council in a press statement.

“What we are discussing here is a profoundly disturbing issue that does not happen in our society. The Board of Directors continues to set ethical standards of conduct that all members of the Academy have to respect, “the press release said.

Weinstein, aged 65, faces charges of sexual assault from over 20 women and three rapes. He apologized for “causing much pain,” but strongly denied all allegations of non-consensual sex. He is currently believed to be in Arizona where he is “treated” for his behavioral problems.

In its 90-year history, the American Academy of Film expelled only another member, and only because 83-year-old actor Carmine Caridi has violated the specific written rules on the distribution of copies of film scenes in 2004.

No members have ever been excluded on ethical grounds, not even Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby or Mel Gibson, who have been charged with sexual assault.

The Academy Council, made up of 54 members, had two-thirds of the votes cast to trigger Weinstein’s exclusion. The vote was overwhelming.

And the British Film Academy, Bafta, suspended Weinstein last week, cataloging his alleged behavior as “totally unacceptable and incompatible with Bafta’s values.”

Sallie Hofmeister, Harvey Weinstein’s spokeswoman, is investigated by both US and British police, said: “Any accusations of non-consensual sex are undoubtedly denied by Mr. Weinstein.

Regarding any woman who has filed allegations in the file, Mr. Weinstein believes that all these relationships were consensual. “
